{"id":3764,"date":"2024-10-16T14:44:41","date_gmt":"2024-10-16T13:44:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jigsaw-research.co.uk\/?p=3764"},"modified":"2025-02-21T09:31:41","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T09:31:41","slug":"cell-gene-therapies-are-on-the-rise-but-are-we-ready","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/us\/blog\/cell-gene-therapies-are-on-the-rise-but-are-we-ready\/","title":{"rendered":"Cell &amp; Gene Therapies are on the rise &#8230; but are we ready?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Driven by a continued focus on personalised medicine, Cell &amp; Gene therapies have experienced continued growth over the past 15 years, with the number of FDA-approved therapies more than doubling since 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"394\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jigsaw-research.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/fda-graph-1024x394.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"No of Gene &amp; Cell Therapies Graph\" class=\"wp-image-3782\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/fda-graph-1024x394.webp 1024w, https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/fda-graph-300x116.webp 300w, https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/fda-graph-768x296.webp 768w, https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/fda-graph-18x7.webp 18w, https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/fda-graph.webp 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the increased availability of Cell &amp; Gene therapies is great news for patients, particularly those with rare diseases or those for which there is no alternative treatment, ensuring patients can access these therapeutics presents significant challenges for governments, regulators &amp; healthcare providers. This then begs the question: Do we have the necessary frameworks and infrastructure to deliver these novel therapeutics to patients?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A report recently published by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) suggests that in the UK, the NHS has coped well to date in terms of providing access to these medicines, although the influx of new approvals for future Cell &amp; Gene therapies presents the following significant challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"384\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jigsaw-research.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/life-science-chart-1024x384.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Gene &amp; Cell Therapies Chart\" class=\"wp-image-3781\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/life-science-chart-1024x384.webp 1024w, https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/life-science-chart-300x113.webp 300w, https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/life-science-chart-768x288.webp 768w, https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/life-science-chart-18x7.webp 18w, https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/life-science-chart.webp 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the extremely high cost of Cell &amp; Gene Therapies, affordability represents by far the main barrier to providing access to these medicines. Therefore, the main recommendation of the ABPI report, which could also apply to other countries, is to consider innovative pricing models that would aim to spread the cost of these treatments over a longer period, rather than relying on a high initial upfront cost, which could lead them to being judged to be unaffordable for most. In fact, several alternative payment models have already been deployed for Gene &amp; Cell Therapies in several countries, including the US, Europe &amp; Asia. Such innovation could enable other countries (including the UK) to develop policies that could enable greater patient access to these expensive but highly valuable treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The above example is just one of the various challenges and questions that we are dealing with every day for our Life Science clients.
