{"id":3511,"date":"2024-10-03T15:29:12","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T14:29:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/18.132.61.227\/?p=3511"},"modified":"2025-02-21T09:33:10","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T09:33:10","slug":"how-we-used-behavioural-economics-to-help-rbs-understand-the-consumer-buying-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/us\/case-studies\/how-we-used-behavioural-economics-to-help-rbs-understand-the-consumer-buying-journey\/","title":{"rendered":"How we used behavioural economics to help RBS understand the consumer buying journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Using Behavioural Economics to understand behaviour \u2013 and change it<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The puzzle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Royal Bank of Scotland needed to take its understanding of consumer buying decisions to another level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How could they avoid any assumptions that would cloud their thinking?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How could they get the deepest possible understanding?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The pieces<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of an extensive buying journey project, we asked 148 consumers to keep an online diary for up to 6 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consumers recorded their efforts to decide on a variety of financial products and providers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The diaries revealed contradictions and changes of direction that consumers were often unaware of.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post-diary interviews allowed us to explore this apparently irrational behaviour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The picture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our analysis revealed multiple biases across a range of financial services product categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The biases uncovered included regret aversion, status quo bias and mental accounting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To identify strategies to help change behaviour, we ran co-creation workshops with the bank\u2019s teams.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We devised strategies to tackle key issues with our \u201cBypass\/ Leverage\/ Tackle\u201d (BLT) approach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Using Behavioural Economics to understand behaviour \u2013 and change it The puzzle The Royal Bank of Scotland needed to take its understanding of consumer buying decisions to another level.
