{"id":1886,"date":"2020-09-04T09:14:46","date_gmt":"2020-09-04T09:14:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jigsaw-research.co.uk\/?p=1886"},"modified":"2024-10-17T16:48:46","modified_gmt":"2024-10-17T15:48:46","slug":"4-covid-charts-that-ill-never-get-to-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jigsaw-research.strat7.com\/us\/blog\/4-covid-charts-that-ill-never-get-to-use\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Covid charts that I\u2019ll never get to use"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>During the pandemic I\u2019ve seen a rise in people getting hands on with the data and producing a range of different charts to show the number of cases and deaths around the world. It\u2019s rare to have a dataset where data can be collected and reported on a daily basis for this long. So here are some of my favourite chart types that I\u2019ll probably never get to use\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bar Chart Race<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I originally saw this chart being used to compare the most sold video games of all time (Tetris was top for a very long time). However, it is now being used and updated daily to represent the number of cases per country as time moves on. It\u2019s a great way to show how the ranking changes over time along with the data that drives that ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flower Chart<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/dataisbeautiful\/comments\/hq090l\/oc_the_us_coronavirus_outbreak_to_date\/\">[OC] The US Coronavirus outbreak to date<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/dataisbeautiful\">r\/dataisbeautiful<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of data freely available has also inspired members of the public to get hands on. This redditor created a chart showing US cases over time by state. While size and colour are showing the same thing \u2013 they compliment each other to highlight where there\u2019s a problem and draw the viewer\u2019s eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sunset \/ Sunrise Chart<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jigsaw-research.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Sunset-chart.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1921\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t make a list of charts without seeing what the latest is from <a href=\"http:\/\/Informationisbeautiful.net\">Informationisbeautiful.net<\/a>. This Sunset \/ Sunrise Chart (I imagine it has a proper name) could have been a bar chart, but with 30 different countries listed it would have looked awful. Charting it around a semi-circle makes the data clearer and more interesting! This one doesn\u2019t have time series data so I might try and use this one once I work out the logistics on PowerPoint\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Music Chart&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(sound on for this one)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Time-Lapse Map of Every Death From the Coronavirus Pandemic (Up to July 2020)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qpRMLR7VkO8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes a graph just isn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This video is a musical illustration of confirmed Covid deaths. Each country has it\u2019s own tone and blip which builds to an ominous crescendo.
